Safe & Drug Free School Curriculum

Here's Looking At You - This is a comprehensive drug education program designed to address the needs of K-12.

We are in process of incorporating this curriculum in grades 3-5 at Bowen. The age appropriate objectives take a preventive stance which address safety, resources available to children both in and outside of the school, influences both good and bad which would attempt to direct a child's decision making and how the control substances manipulate their bodies.

Steps To Respect - This program fosters self respect and the respect of others. It is a graded curriculum which teaches students appropriate ways to deal with bullies. How to report an offense, conflict resolution, and encouraging peers to feel included in a group are all skills practiced in a classroom setting.

3rd Grade

Hays Caldwell Women's Center - presenters - "My Body Belongs To Me", a puppet presentation which addresses appropriate and inappropriate touch.

4th Grade

Here's Looking At You (Survey) - This survey is given both before and at the conclusion of an anti drug curriculum.

5th Grade

Hays Caldwell Women's Center - presenters - "Gender Respect", which includes addressing sexual harassment and body respect.

Here at Scudder Primary, our focus is to educate students on a daily basis about the seriousness of substance abuse and provide them with good decision-making skills.

Indirect Activities

At the primary grade levels, the approach to drug and alcohol counseling and guidance is centered on the idea of character development.

·       Guidance lessons in the area’s of responsibility, problem solving, and self-esteem building are used to provide the child with the skills needed to make healthy choices in life.

·       The negative effects of Drug and Alcohol use are addressed in class discussions when appropriate.

·       The negative effects of Drug and Alcohol use are also addressed in the topics of health instruction.  Examples of how drugs and alcohol can destroy or severely impair one’s health are addressed.

·       The concept of citizenship is addressed in the primary grades.  What makes a good citizen?  What kinds of behaviors are not indicative of a good citizen?  Good citizens do not abuse drugs or alcohol.

·       Choices and Consequences:  Students are taught that there are positive and negative consequences associated with their choices.  Choosing to abuse drugs and alcohol will always bring about negative consequences.

Direct Activities

In September we had a performance by “The Morris Brothers,” which addressed the issues of making healthy choices and avoiding behavior that would put their health and well-being at risk.

During the program, the students

  1. Gain knowledge essential for making legal, safe and healthy decisions about drug use,

  2. Learn about examples of attitudes and behaviors, which prevent drug use,

  3. Learn skills and strategies, which will prevent drug use, and

  4. Be encouraged to develop and practice a personal plan to remain drug free.

The teachers and staff at Scudder Primary will continue to look after the best interest of our students and provide them with the tools they need to be healthy and successful!
