Frequently, truancy is the first sign of personal problems for a child, whether at home, personally, or in school. However, those problems quickly begin to affect the community as a whole. Truancy has been identified as the most powerful predictor of juvenile delinquency. Police departments across the nation report that many students not in school during regular hours are committing crimes, including vandalism, shoplifting, and defacing property (graffiti). When Van Nuys, California, officials focused on truancy for three weeks, shoplifting arrests dropped 60 percent. In addition, truancy is also a leading indicator of failure to graduate from high school. Failure to graduate from high school often leads to low wage-earning potential and other financial and social problems. In an effort to focus on preventing truancy, the Wimberley Independent School District has instituted the following programs: Community In Schools and Students Assistance Programs at the Danforth and High School campus' for individual counseling. At Wimberley High School the district offers "Stay In School" incentives for proper attendance: exemptions for final examinations and off campus lunch benefits. Attendance is Mandatory The State of Texas requires that all children between the ages of 6 and 18 be in school, unless specifically exempted by state law. Please refer to the Wimberley Independent School District's Student Handbook for the current attendance policy. Please refer to the Wimberley Independent School District's Student Handbook for detailed information concerning the consequences of truancy. The Wimberley Independent School District is committed to fighting truancy as a social problem, while making every effort to address the root causes for each individual's attendance problems. With a combination of parental, law enforcement, and community involvement and support, we can keep kids in school. Bowen & Scudder - WILDCATS Junior High & High School - TEXANS / LADY TEXANS W.I.S.D. Risk Behavior Survey Reports Preface Wimberley I.S.D. High School’s primary focus for drug and alcohol use is a three-pronged approach. The first prong is to increase awareness through health education classroom lessons, Peer Assisted Leadership class and programs, Red Ribbon Week activities, and Hays Caldwell Council Leadership Group. Second is keeping drugs and alcohol off campus by enlisting the services of a School Resource Officer, parking lot attendant, drug detection dogs, and specialized nurse training. The school grounds are designated a drug free zone to assist law enforcement and school administration with enforcement policies. Students violating school policies for alcohol and drug use are disciplined and when appropriate reported to local law enforcement. Third individual interventions through the counseling and nursing offices are handled on a confidential basis as a result of ongoing informal and clinical evaluations. Periodically to assist these efforts we survey the student population. The following results from our most recent Texas A&M survey conducted the 2002-2003 school year are provided for public information. In addition to these periodic evaluations the school district files an annual report on drug and alcohol use on campus with the Texas Education Administration as part of our P.E.I.M.S. reporting process. Texas A&M survey scheduled for 2003-2004 was deferred due to TAKS scheduling pressures. The District will begin surveying 8th and 11th grade students annually and posting those results when available. For more information, contact Darelle Jordan
